Some of the material done with SSD :)

Postby JayKay » Tue Jul 26, 2011 3:14 pm

Hi folks!

I wanted to share some of my work that's been done with the help of SSD.
There are several .mp3 here, I would love to hear some input and feedback on the drum sound in general, since I've been using different setups for different songs.

This is the first song I've done with the help of SSD, in general the music is a bit too over-compressed, but I love how the kick and the snare comes out on this one:

This one was done for a band called Mass Hypnosis, they are more of the industrial type, so I was aiming for a more kick/snare based sound:

This one was done rather quickly and more as an info for my music project, called Subscale. The snare as you can hear, is from the Metallica kit which when I listen to it now, I don't really like :)

This on is from a band called Substance Black. Here in general I was aiming for a Mnemic like sound and I think it's nailed pretty good :)

And this is the last one I did, it's still not done fully, the vocals are missing and there is a lot to be mixed and mastered on it, but I like how the drums are really punchy and lemme tell you, the Metallica kick is the best sampled kick in any drum triggering/replacing software you'll ever find :)

Anyway, hope to get some feedback on the tone :)

Thanks dude! :)

Well, it depends, most of them were done via Line6 xt3, but some (Antecedent & Method and Manner) were done with GTR3 from waves and a lot of EQ.

really great drum tones man.;)
could you give more drums info about the "Antecedent (pre-recording session 2011)" clip?
i´d like to know what did you use for kick/snare/toms and what post-processing.
i´d appreciate it a lot,

Hey, sry for the late reply, been busy mixing some stuff and recording a new album for Subscale :)

First off, thank you for the kind words...now, if I remember correctly, on Antecedent I used the Metallica Kick where I rolled off everything below 60Hz.
The snare was a combination of the Metallica snare and a preset I use from Addictive Drums with no snare wire, to get more "skin". Some EQ on it and a decent amount of reverb.
Toms are the standard Quick Toms, with some EQ (cut around 300Hz and rolled off lows around 100Hz and some boots around 1kHZ-a).
That's all I remember, hope it helped :)

Hey guys, here is some more material done in SSD, this time a cover mashup with Rihanna :)
The kick is almost the same as on Kramer, but this time we tried a different snare setting and tried to get the toms to sound like the drum kit on Acacia Strains last CD (Woodworm).
What do you think?

And to drop one more, here is a short sampler from the upcoming album:

All drums are SSD, all guitars AxFX and Line6, as well as bass.
How do you like it?

Sure thing, well, we generally use the black kit from the library.
The sample it self is good but there is a lot of mud, so we kill some low end with below 60Hz.
That's about it for the kick channel, there are a few frequencies around 100-200Hz that should also be removed, but you will have to find them by ear and drop them 3-6dB.
We also use a separate room channel for the whole set, where we send the kick and mix it in just a little bit into the mix, if I remember correctly, it was around -20dB or more, but that of course depends on the whole mix and picture.
There is also a parallel compressor where the whole kit is pushed into through separate send channel and mixed in to thicken up the whole sound.
